The Wedding
So, I am not a religious person. If Iâm perfectly honest, the practices of the catholic and churches of England are beyond me, but, apparently, even today, same-sex marriage still falls short of Godâs purpose for human beings. This means that while these churches purport to welcome all, they still appear incapable of finding a broad consensus that would allow gay marriages to be blessed in church.
This came as a bitter disappointment to Aaron, who was raised as a Christian. For him, marrying in an open church isnât just a fad, or something to look good in Instagram photos, but itâs spiritual.
Unknown to me, the event at Porthcove wasnât the only reason the lads postponed their wedding; it was also because they were holding out for a church to stop cogitating and make a universally accepted decision.
Aaron, being ever the obliger, was happy to settle for a Register Office wedding, but David turned his nose up at that because, well, what was the point of getting married in good ole historic blighty if all they were going to do was end up getting married in a grey government building anyway?
Hardly the ceremony of a lifetime.
Still, the venue that let them down had a licence to conduct wedding ceremonies. Holt, obviously, does not.
So, the plan is for the boys to sign papers and be legally married at 09:00 am this morning at Camden Register Office. From there, theyâll be picked up by a gorgeous silver Rolls Royce Phantom in which theyâll make the two-hour journey (traffic permitting) to Holt, where they will be officially married by a celebrant at 11:00 am.
Most of the American contingent, including Aunt Martha and Berthaâthe spinster sisters of Aaronâs motherâMelda, yeah, their parents obviously had a thing for names ending with an a, are already installed at hotels and B&Bs in the area. As are most of the other guests who had initially been booked into the previous venue. This is good because it means no last-minute dramas of people getting stuck in traffic. Just the grooms. Yeah, maybe I didnât entirely think that one through.
Itâs fine. Itâs all good. The fact that I had yet another sleepless night last night and was already up and watching the golden haze of dawn grow beyond the trees is absolutely to be expected. As is the fact that I am so nervous that you would have thought it was me walking down that aisle made of ninety-five per cent reclaimed oak, you knowâwhy on earth do I feel like I have to say that every time?
Shit.
Itâs fine. Itâs all good.
Itâs 06:00 am, and I am downing my third espresso of the day.
After all the planning and prepping, I should be ready for this, but I realise that itâs the opposite. All that planning has only fed my neurosis and my newly metastasized obsession, doing right by the boys.
A hand on my shoulder startles me, but Iâm pleasantly surprised to find that itâs Sarahâwho else?
âHey,â she says sleepily, running both of her hands over my shoulders.
